For that reason, I'd recommend setting this to realistic regardless of whether you're a new player or a veteran. This setting determines how much damage your friendly units take in combat but excludes your own character. Friendly Parties Received Damage: Realistic.Friendly Troops Received Damage: Realistic. This can also be used in conjunction with a shield, but it becomes more important when fighting without one. It almost entirely negates the value of attack spamming because spammers are predictable and being able to block with your attack animation will completely ruin them. Without shield: Learn to "chamber block" - this is something I've only recently been advised about, and am trying to learn for myself. Or use the shield to get in close then quickly dodge around them with a slash into their back. You can also use the shield to get inside the enemy's effective range then use your own, shorter weapon to hit them while their attacks are reduced in effectiveness.

To conclude: yes two-handers are very powerful and some swing faster than they should, that said, all weapon types are perfectly viable in the right situation in my opinion. As you mentioned it has a slower swing speed and the fact its unbalanced leaves you vulnerable to counter-attacks, however when your opponent has no chance of moving out of the way aka in a shield wall or on a ladder, the fact that the overhead attack is unblockable makes it quite a potent weapon, especially against armoured opponents. I find the sledgehammer to be very situational. That said, spears have a very fast swing speed and are deadly in their own right if used two handed themselves. 1h+shields are definitely dangerous, more so in close quarters/shieldwalls where they have the advantage over the bigger 2h weapons.Īs for the spear and shield combo, I personally see it as more of a support role, not meant to rack up kills necessarily but to poke and distract enemies from a relative distance whilst your teammates finish them off. While I will agree that some of the two handed weapons swing much too fast, to say that other weapon types are unusable is a huge overstatement in my opinion.
